CKWL on Tatkal railway ticket

So the other day I booked a tatkal ticket online from IRCTC. After the usual 500 errors and multiple tries I came to the "Congratulations!" page where they gave me the ticket details. And this is what I found in the ticket's status "CKWL 23". I wondered what the heck it was. Googling did not help. I shot off a mail to the IRCTC customer care and within half an hour I got their reply. Reproducing their reply below -
Dear Customer, Kindly note that CK stands for Tatkal CKWL means Tatkal Wait list Ticket. Thanks & Regards
So there it goes. Official reply from IRCTC. CKWL is the waiting list for the tatkal quota. It's just like the "WL" you get on the normal ticket, except it's on the tatkal quota. No idea what CK stands for though. Although the reply wasn't exactly Shakespeare, I was impressed that they got back to me so soon. It's nice to see the Railways doing good stuff. There's still room to improve though. Have you had a similar experience with IRCTC? Frustrating one? Good one? The comment form is right below :) Update : Found something in the IRCTC site in the ngpay FAQ. It says(in point 9)
Booking can be done against general (GN), ladies (LD) and tatkal (CK) quota berths/seats only.  
. What this means is that GNWL is General Quota Waiting list, LDWL is Ladies Quota Waiting List and CKWL is Tatkal Quota Waiting list. Pretty much any 4 letter acronym ending in WL is some Waiting list quota or another. For instance if you have been wondering what PQWL means in IRCTC, then it is a Pooled Quota Waiting List.     I am also experiencing to same problem.I think now IRCTC is concentrating on profits for indian rail and ignoring the quality of services.

    I got a tatkal ticket of WL 17 in sleeper on train 2833. Today is 24th Feb 2010. and my train is on 26th Feb.?
    Total tatkal seats is 229. Is it likely to be confirmed?

    @s de : I doubt that the total number of tatkal seats is 229. But I think you have a decent chance of getting your ticket confirmed.

    CKWL is the only waiting list within the tatkal quota. There is no RAC. However it’s limited only to the tatkal quota. It has no effect on the General Quota or Ladies Quota or any other quota.

    yup, there’s a high chance of it getting cleared. But sometimes you have to wait till the last moment.

    I booked 2 tickets through http://www.irctc.co.in (tatkal) because the availability status was showing as 5 . however after i confirmed the tickets and took a printout the status was showing as CKWL 78 and 79 … I have no idea what CK is . calvin klein waiting list ??? also why is the website showing 5 available when there were no confirmed tickets anyway . Really got duped by irctc.co.in. if these guys cant handle the online stuff it would be better to do it the old way.. paying the TT a couple of hundred bucks for a confirmed ticket is way better that getting duped by national railway .

    @James : “5 available” is at the time of booking. But by the time your ticket comes through 82 people have already booked the ticket. Big rush!

    everytime i try to book tatkal ticket in the morning at 8.00 am from irctc.co.in what i find is that the irctc sites gets down server problem for about 15-20minutes and, by the time it returns to its normal condition i find a very funny status about my train, i.e., from about 220 available tickets in the tatkal quota now the waiting list part has come into the picture..all 220 tickets are booked nw..what a crap…

    can anyone tell me the reason for that down server problem everytime???

    The reason the server goes down so often is that they’re not handling the servers well enough wrt the load on them. Things should be better now with the delay in agent bookings

    Got ckwl 2/confirmed for gt express for tonight. Hope that means a confirmed seat. Can’t handle a long journey standing. :-( i can’t tell you how glad i am that i read the meaning in your blog and also, feeling very dumb for not knowing it.

    As with everything else, every rule in Public (GOVT) Services is ‘programmed with all possible confusions and loopholes’ to serve the elites. read – brokers – quotrochis and andersons. railways is also one of the most effective wing to ration to the common – aam admi – man. Avoid dreams.

    This irctc sucks!!!! this morrons showed availability as 210 when i started booking.. when the payment options finished(in 2-3mins)the bloody fuckers say its ckwl15.. this irctc site is just a piece of shit in the case of tatkal booking.. going to a brooker is much better than this..
