Forgot to print the ticket you got from IRCTC? Not a problem, if you have a copy of the ticket in your laptop or mobile. As per the latest IRCTC notification (emphasis added) -

Electronic Reservation Slip (ERS) – The printout in standard specified Performa containing reservation particulars, and instructions for use which can be used by the passenger along with the relevant authorized Identification, as travel authority for performing the journey.

Virtual Reservation Message (VRM) – A screen-shot of the e-ticket displayed through laptops/palmtops/ Mobile phone is referred as Virtual Reservation Message (VRM).

ERS/VRM along with any one of the eight prescribed ID proofs in original and the indication of the passenger(s)’ name(s) in the Reservation Chart will authorize the passenger to travel.

VRM combined with valid photo-id in original will be treated as an instrument on par with the ERS.

ERS/VRM along with one of the eight prescribed proofs of identity in original will also authorize the passenger to enter the platform on the day of journey and he/she will not be required to purchase platform ticket. ERS/VRM along with original id proof will be required to be produced on demand of Ticket Checking Staff on the platform.

– as per https://www.irctc.co.in/VRM.htm

What this means is that you can show a screenshot or pdf of the ticket from IRCTC along with your ID card in original (which you needed to anyway) instead of a printout.

Save paper, save trees. What an idea, sirjee :)

My mother was denied travel by the railway official on 11/Sep/2011 from Hyderabad to Bangalore. He Misbehaved and was rude in his demeanor as a public servant, vehemently denying the rules of the VRM system. Not knowing the rules of the board is one thing, but behaving disrespectfully with a lady senior citizen is an extreme case. He made my aged mom run around to fetch a printout late in the night, when he definite knew she would fail to do so, while it was close to her boarding time. She finally resorted to pay a fine imposed by this official. We are not sure if the fine will actually make it to the railway board, or just be a cup of coffee for this official.

Viswanath, sorry to hear about it. The printouts of the new eTickets specifically mention the VRM. What happened was wrong on the part of the official. You should complain to the Complaint Inspector of your railway division.

hi…i also had the same experience….I was travelling from Trivandrum to Kottayam with the e-ticket booked on 28/-9/2011 (Wednesday). I came to know about the circular “Reference : Railway Board Letter No.2008/TG-I/10/P/SMS dated 20.07.2011′, stating that there is no need of printing the e-ticket.i saw the same in IRCTC website also. I had the ticket saved on my mobile. When the TTR came for checking, i has shown the ticket in my mobile. He was arguing with me that there is no such rule and he forced me to pay the fine of Rs. 50. He was not at all ready to listen about the circular.

Very sad to hear about a senior citizen suffer like this. But the truth of the matter is we have extremely cruel animal like humans roaming in the society who would do anything for few extra bucks.
According to me these idiots are no different then the criminals who enter your homes and rob you or a street thug who rob’s someone on knife point.

You will find these kind of people everywhere but mostly in the government sectors, be it the police, muncipal office , ration office and other offices.

These people mostly come from poor, corrupt unedecated family who were never taught what is wrong and right the difference between a honest income versus a dis-honest income and so to come up in life they resort to such extremely shameful manner just for a fancy smart phone, big lcd/led tv, new car or a new house which probably their families never had thier entire life.

MOST IMPORTATNT: NOTE THEIR BADGE NO, NAME CITY , SECTOR TRAVELLING AND MAKE A WRITTEN COMPLAINT EITHER ON PAPER AT THE PROPER OFFICE OR THROUGH EMAILS ON THEIR WEBSITE.

THIS IS THE ONLY WAY TO CHANGE THE SYSTEM.

I HAVE DONE IT SEVERAL TIMES AND SEEN IT MAKE DIFFERNCE AND GOT POSITIVE RESULTS MANY TIMES.

    GOOD LUCK AND TAKE CARE.

Would you please clarify my doubts. How to get the VRM in my mobile. What are the steps to be followed. Please clear the doubts as so many passengers including myself are not aware of this concept.
    Thank you,
    RadhakrishnanS.

Radhakrishnan, You can install a tool like PDFForge ( http://www.pdfforge.org/ ) or CutePDF in your computer. This will create a fake printer in your system. Use the print ticket option in IRCTC to print the ticket using the PDFForge or CutePDF. These will create PDF files, transfer these to your phone. If you’re using a phone that displays PDF, you can now use this PDF.

The other approach would be to take a screenshot of the ticket. Now transfer it to your phone and show it.

The railway officials are queer, they never bother to be updated regarding the circulars / orders issued by the Indian Railway authorities. The driver’s booze and without a breathalyzer test drive long distance trains, which may lead to horrific accidents. Though all of the drivers are not of the same ilk. But TTEs are more keen on taking money, i.e. bribes, even if you have a valid i-ticket /e-ticket. They would coerce and fleece you merrily throwing all rules to the wind. Are the satraps of IR, listening?
